The also share driving ( after a fashion) on the left and English is one of Maltas two official languages, in spite of its tourist attraction Malta still remains a slice of living history, fans of architecture will love the city, the baroque streets and houses, prehistoric necropolises, fortified citadels and some of the best dive sights in Europe, and the never to be forgotten stunning Cathedral of St John, home to Caravaggio's astonishingly realistic masterpiece The Beheading of St John.
The view over the aptly named Grand Harbour from the Upper Barraka Gardens is quite stunning and has been described as being one of the most beautiful in the Med. The tiny capital of Valletta rightly claims the title of a UNESCO World Heritage site and you could spend your entire time in this beautiful city just staring up, at, around, and inside its stunning buildings.
Gozo is Malta's smaller sister island and if the fancy takes, there's a daily catamaran service to whisk you off for a days sightseeing in the nearby Island of Sicily.
The elegant streets of Valletta are crammed not only with great shops also pavement cafes and bars spew onto the pavements, here you can snack and also people watch. During lunch and dinner you will find fish is king with a plate of the days catch washed down with some Sicilian wine being something special to e mail home about. Its here visitors can eat well without having a heart attack once the bill is presented ( do try the savoury cheesecake stuffed with ricotta cheese)
Its a town that's perfect for the discerning romantic, although one establishment originally titled The Pub' boasts a more raucous history as it was here the late great great imbiber and actor Oliver Reed had his final mammoth drinking session during the filming of Gladiator.
